Monkstown Village Garden is a uniquely designed community garden which benefits from assisted funding.  Features of our garden include: two polytunnels with a number of raised flower beds, providing our residents with opportunities to participate in a variety of gardening related activities; and a sensory garden to enliven the senses, providing a natural space to unwind and relax. A welcome is extended to everyone to use the community garden where it offers opportunities for learning new skills in addition to volunteering and socialising.

Vision

Our vision is to create, develop and sustain an area which is attractive and enjoyable to visit whether for work, rest or simply contemplation, and a space that contributes positively to the environmental quality of the Monkstown area.

Community

Our garden is a space where all our community residents are welcome. It’s a place where they can relax and make new friends. Additionally, it is also a place for sharing gardening knowledge; promoting self-sufficiency, providing healthy and productive activities for our residents and fostering a sense of community in Monkstown Village.

Sensory Garden

The sensory garden is in our woodland area and features a selection of plants and materials laid out in such a way to stimulate the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. The garden changes with the differing seasons and visitor participation, and would positively benefit from further design.

Polytunnel

Our large polytunnel which now has electric power and lighting has been a great asset to our community garden. It comprises 15.8 x 8.5 meters (58 x 28ft) and is fitted with a range of work benches, raised beds and for the convenience of our visitors, seating areas. The polytunnel, in addition to allowing for development in the choice of plants also offers a superb arena for holding workshops and meetings under the cover of the tunnel. We have a smaller polytunnel, with raised beds and primarily for growing.

Opening Times

The garden is open every Monday from 10.00am till 4.00pm and on other days by arrangement, for a number of purposes including; volunteer sessions, sale of produce (when available) and visits. The sensory garden can be visited anytime between 9.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Saturday.

We Need Your Help!

NO GARDENING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

As we are currently in the process of transforming and developing our Community garden at the rear of Monkstown Village Centre, a task which is progressing well, however we are always in need of volunteers to help us with this great community project. We would therefore welcome anyone who has a desire to become involved.

Learning

We offer bespoke gardening workshops to small and large groups and have recently provided training to Abbey Community College and Hollybank Primary School students. Over the coming year we propose to offer a wide range of events, courses and workshops open to everyone in the community and can offer tailored training to anyone wishing to learn more about gardening and the natural environment.

Business

Partnership with local businesses and non-profit organisations will ensure continuity and growth of our community garden. We are in need of assistance; both financial and physical. If you have a desire to become involved in a way which improves the lives of others in the community and to receive great PR, then please contact us.

There are plenty of possibilities for working together. We could:

  • Carry out enjoyable corporate volunteering days
  • Launch a community or education project around food growing, wildlife, local pride or another issue.
  • Work together on competitions or discount promotions – we would love to hear from you either by phone or on the above email address.
